The Throne Room
A door opens in heaven and John sees the seat of judgment: a fiery jasper glow, a dark sardine core, and a rainbow tinted like an emerald circling the throne.
Key idea
The throne is a courtroom. The fire shows judgment, and the emerald rainbow shows the promise of the New Covenant.
The story in simple words
Revelation 4:1
An open door means John was given permission to look inside the highest court and write down what happens next.
King James words: “After this I looked, and, behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter.”
Revelation 4:3
Jasper glows red and gold like fire. Sardine is deep brown. The emerald rainbow is bright green, the colour of new life.
King James words: “And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald.”
Hebrews 12:29
The fire around the throne is God's own presence. It purifies; it does not need fuel.
King James words: “For our God is a consuming fire.”
Historical context
- • Genesis 9:11-17 records the rainbow as a covenant sign after the flood, so a rainbow at the throne is a reminder of a promise.
- • At Mount Sinai (Exodus 19:14-25) Israel heard thunder and saw a thick cloud, the same courtroom atmosphere John describes.
